If you’re an athlete planning to use CBD products, you may be wondering if they will cause you to fail drug screenings. Because of the fear of failing a drug test, some athletes opt for products that contain pure CBD, known as a CBD isolates. However this may not be the most effective form of CBD. Before choosing a product, it’s important to understand the different types of CBD products available and how all the ingredients work together.
Much of the research exploring CBD products and their benefits has focused on how it influences the human endocannabinoid system (ECS). The ECS works to balance our hormones and nervous system. When this balance is upset, myriad health ailments can ensue.
One of the reasons CBD products may be so effective in treating ailments is due to what’s called the “entourage effect” among the different compounds naturally present in cannabis. CBD (short for cannabinol) is more effective when acting in combination with other compounds. When cannabinoids work synergistically together, they bring additional medicinal effects to the table.
In many of our Zebra CBD products, multiple types of cannabinoids (in addition to CBD) and terpenes (compounds that give CBD products their unique color and odor) are combined to produce the entourage effect. These combined products are preferred to a single CBD isolate, which contains only cannabinol.
The primary distinction among CBD products is whether they contain THC (the psychoactive ingredient in cannabis) and other cannabinoids. Depending on what you intend to use CBD for, you may choose one type of product over the other. There are 3 main types of CBD products based on the ingredients they contain:
CBD isolate: cannabinol only
Full-spectrum CBD: multiple cannabinoids and less than 0.3% THC
Broad-Spectrum CBD: CBD, a reduced number of cannabinoids, and no THC.
In addition to educating yourself of CBD types, it's important to choose a brand that provides a label accuracy guarantee to ensure that what's listed on the label matches what is actually in the container.
Athletes may turn to CBD products for several reasons, including pain relief, improved recovery, as a sleep aid or to decrease performance anxiety. The world of competitive athletics can be taxing both physically and emotionally. Performance enhancers like CBD can be an excellent complement to a nutritious diet, effective training regimen and proper sleep.
Pain from competition is real. To remain competitive, proper recovery and muscle repair is a non-negotiable. Sleep is equally as important for repair between trainings. Studies have shown that athletes who sleep better, perform better. Performance anxiety is common in athletes, and CBD may help you to feel more calm and relaxed.
If you prefer to take a full-spectrum CBD, find out how long it takes to become undetectable in your system and then stopping taking it in time for it to clear before competition season begins. If you're concerned about failing a drug test, check the company's website for a certificate of analysis showing the results of third-party testing, or request this information from the manufacturer.
Our new sister company, Zebra CBD, offers premium CBD products in a variety of forms, including convenient topicals for athletes.
