The science

What the research says.

An honest summary of published studies on the ingredients in Altitude RX.

  • Altitude RX

    Vitamins C and E with alpha-lipoic acid

2.8 vs 4.0altitude sickness score, supplement vs placebo

In a small double-blind trial, 18 people took a daily antioxidant combination (1,000 mg vitamin C, 400 IU vitamin E and 600 mg alpha-lipoic acid) for 3 weeks, then trekked to Everest Base Camp. The supplement group scored lower on the Lake Louise altitude sickness scale (2.8 vs 4.0) and had higher resting oxygen saturation (89% vs 85%).

Good to know: Only 18 people took part, and a Cochrane review (evidence to January 2019) rated the evidence low certainty. Four Altitude RX capsules a day give 1,000 mg of vitamin C and about 400 IU of vitamin E, similar to the trial. The amount of alpha-lipoic acid in Altitude RX is not listed separately.

Bailey & Davies, High Altitude Medicine & Biology, 2001

  • Altitude RX

    Ginkgo biloba

    Mixedresults across 7 trials

A Cochrane review of 7 trials (523 people) found conflicting results on ginkgo and altitude sickness, from a large effect to none, and rated the evidence low certainty. One large trial of 487 trekkers on the Everest approach, taking 120 mg twice daily, found no difference from placebo (35% vs 34%).

Good to know: Results differ by study design and dose. Ginkgo is one half of the OxyBoost™ Complex, which lists a single 390 mg total for alpha-lipoic acid and ginkgo together, so each serving's ginkgo amount is not listed. Ginkgo can affect how some medications work, including blood thinners.

Cochrane review: Interventions for preventing high altitude illness, Part 3 (evidence to Jan 2019)

These studies are on individual ingredients, not on Altitude RX itself, and the amounts studied can differ from the amount in a serving. They looked at altitude sickness; Altitude RX is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Talk with your healthcare professional before starting any supplement.

    Amazing Supplement!

This worked really well for me in Peru last month on my high altitude trekking trip. I had no issues with altitude and did not need to take any RX prescriptions like others did on this trip. Hiked the Salkantay Route 8 days at an altitude from 11,000 feet up to a max of 15,245 feet. Be sure to drink plenty of water as well at high altitude this is a key factor along with these supplements. I have already purchased more of this to have for my next trip. Thanks for making a great natural product.

    Very useful supplement

Bought it to attempt a 14k mtn in CA, but ended up using it on a 10k hike (Clouds Rest) and 13k peak (Mt Dana) and felt strong for both hikes. Usually I feel altitude around 12k, but Altitude RX worked as advertised. Since I have a bunch of capsules left over, I started using them to supplement when I have mtn bike rides with a lot of climbing, and seems to help as well…

    Altitude RX

We just returned from a week in Colorado. We took a family of seven adventure seekers to the mountains and I wanted to ensure we all felt our best. We started the day before as directed and continued for the first few days of our trip. All seven of us felt great! We were in some of the highest elevations in CO. and no altitude symptoms at all!!!! I highly recommend this product!

    Really helped minimize the effects

Really helped minimize the effects of altitude sickness for me. Still had a slight headache and bit of nausea for the first 24 hours but after that I felt 100%. I normally have a searing headache and nausea for a minimum of 3 days. Can't sleep. It's awful.

    Altitude RX is a godsend.

Questions, answered

Everything to know before you order Altitude RX.

What is in Altitude RX?

Each serving (2 capsules) has 500 mg of vitamin C, 134 mg of vitamin E (as d-alpha tocopheryl acetate) and the OxyBoost™ Complex, a 390 mg pairing of alpha-lipoic acid and ginkgo biloba leaf extract. It is made to support your body as it adjusts to high altitude.*

When should I start taking it?

Take 2 capsules twice daily, starting 24 hours before you travel to altitude. If you did not start early, begin as soon as you arrive, and keep taking it for as long as you are at altitude.

How many capsules can I take in a day?

No more than 4 capsules in 24 hours.

How long does a bottle last?

One bottle has 120 capsules (60 servings of 2 capsules). At the full dose of 4 capsules a day, that is 30 days. A shorter trip uses fewer capsules, and the 3-bottle subscription covers longer or repeat trips.

What if I feel unwell at altitude?

Common altitude symptoms include headache, dizziness, nausea, tiredness and poor sleep. A supplement is not a treatment for altitude illness. If you feel unwell, rest, avoid going higher, and get medical care if symptoms are serious or do not ease. Plan your ascent with a healthcare professional.

Is there research behind it?

Some of the ingredients have published studies at altitude, with mixed results. The research section above summarizes them in plain language. Those studies are on the individual ingredients, not on Altitude RX, and the amounts studied can differ from the amount in a serving.

I compete in a tested sport. What should I know?

BRL Sports formulas are drug-free. If you compete in a tested sport, review the full ingredient list and your governing body's rules before you use any supplement.

Who should talk to a doctor first?

Talk with your healthcare professional before starting any supplement, especially if you are pregnant or nursing, have a medical condition, are planning surgery, or take medication. Ginkgo and vitamin E can affect how some medications work, including blood thinners.

How does the subscription work?

Choose a 1-bottle subscription (10% off, delivered monthly) or the 3-bottle subscription (25% off, delivered every 3 months). Both ship free, and you can skip, pause or cancel anytime from your account. Prefer not to subscribe? You can buy one bottle one time at the regular price plus shipping.

What is your guarantee?

Your first order is backed by our 90-day money-back guarantee. It applies once per person in the USA and excludes purchases from international distributors or resellers. See the Money-Back Guarantee and Returns/Cancellations pages for the full terms.

What is the difference between Altitude RX and Altitude Boost?

Altitude RX is taken on trips to altitude, starting the day before you go up. Altitude Boost is a separate formula taken daily with a meal as part of altitude training support. See its product page for details.
