Branch-Chain Amino Acids for Endurance

"I experience tremendous energy bursts toward the end of 100-mile bike training rides and run my fastest splits at the end of my long run training. This doesn’t happen with just any fuel. TriFuel is unique in that it is a pre-, during and post-workout fuel. It sets you up for a great training/race day, carries you to places you never thought possible and prepares you for your next workout."Tanya Houghton, Ironman Triathlete, World Champion

Endurance athletes like Tanya (pictured above in a Kona™ race), are addicted to pushing limits and challenging personal boundaries. They know they need the right nutrition to help you dig deeper than ever before at your next event. Sure, there are plenty of supplements out there and you can experiment until you find the perfect combination, but why not just try something that simply works and has powerful research to back it up?

The branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs) in TriFuel can help you take your training to the next level.

What are BCAAs?

Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. There are nine amino acids that are considered “essential” for human health. These must come from your diet because the body cannot make them on its own. A diet with adequate protein will provide all nine amino acids for general health, but might not have enough to support the physical demands of endurance athletes.

BCAAs consist of three amino acids and are particularly critical for athletic performance. Leucine, L-isoleucine and L-valine have been shown to reduce muscle soreness, boost endurance and promote muscle synthesis in endurance athletes. Athletes who supplement with BCAAs report more energy, increased performance and faster recovery.

BCAAs and Endurance

At some point during an endurance event, carbohydrates run out and the body is forced to switch to another source of energy. This is frequently referred to as “hitting a wall,” where your legs start to feel like lead. Sometimes when this occurs, if the body is not able to switch to burning fat it is forced to break down muscle for energy. When this happens, performance is impacted.

Taking a BCAA supplement during an event can help mitigate muscle breakdown and damage. A 2007 study published in the International Journal of Sports Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism found that BCAAs reduced muscle damage and helped speed recovery. Dr. Beau Kjerulf Greer and his team of researchers examined the effect of a BCAA drink on markers of muscle damage after endurance exercise. A BCAA drink was compared with an equal calorie carbohydrate drink and a flavored water placebo. The group found all measured markers of fatigue were reduced in the BCAA-supplemented group.

However, Greer's study also indicated that the best results were attained by supplementing with both BCAAs and carbohydrates. Unlike carbohydrates, BCAAs do not maintain glycogen stores, so relying solely on this supplement could negatively impact performance. TriFuel 3-in-1 Endurance & Recovery Formula combines both BCAAs and carbs for greater energy and muscle recovery.

Other studies have shown similar results, with BCAA supplementation reducing ammonia levels and other damaging substances during endurance events.

BCAAs may also improve performance. A 2006 study in the European Journal of Applied Physiology found that supplementation with L-leucine for 6 weeks allowed canoeists to increase max rowing time by a full minute when rowing at 75% of their max power. A whole minute shaved off your event time can make a huge difference in your performance!

TriFuel for BCAAs

Most athletes, even those with a healthy diet, simply are not getting enough BCAAs to support the increased activity of the muscles. TriFuel 3-in-1 Endurance and Recovery Drink provides 6 grams of BCAAs — more than any product on the market, to increase your performance, preserve muscle and promote recovery. The BCAAs in TriFuel are in the optimal ratio of 2:1:1, with two parts L-leucine to one part L-valine and L-isoleucine.

But TriFuel formula has more ingredients to support endurance athletes. It also contains electrolytes, easily digested carbohydrates, performance enhancers and recovery boosters. It can replace the use of multiple products with just one drink.

With all your energy and recovery needs supplied in one safe, natural formula, you can devote more attention to training and preparing for your next big event — and going places you never thought possible...
